Innovative Ideas using Traditional Canvas

 Marina and received a very positive response from everyone on D & E dock. This was the beginning of our new business. We then moved into, a 3000 square foot building that was, the original main office of Harrison Marina, on the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio. We bought a 16’ Step Van and I built our Mobile Sewing Center. It includes a large table, all the and tools needed, plus A/C. It even has our Tube Bender & Crowner machines on the rear.

This machine allow us to create very strong frames.  We grew to five employees and expanded our business six fold. We branched out into Marine Upholstery, then into Commercial, Industrial and Contract. We made Industrial machine covers, catch cloths; etc.  Our biggest job was a Contract job for a manufacturer of Golf Simulators. They were 12’ x 14’ x 10’ fabric rooms that enclosed the screen I designed and their electronic equipment.

We now make several products that we sell on Ebay, under the label of Crystal Bay Marine. Our products list: Mainsail Cover, Jib/Staysail Day-bag, Custom Anchor Sails, Misc. Covers, Protection devices, MOB Recovery Systems, Bike Bags.

We still do Marine Canvas and Upholstery, but have scaled back our business and plan to sell out in two years, then go cruising on “Risque”, our 37’ Sailboat.

We will continue to sell on our New Site and do the occasional repairs and new canvas for our friends at Harbor View Yacht Club and friends we met while cruising on the Great Lakes.  Look for our new website:

             J&R Specialty Canvas started out in the Moto Cross Cover

business back in 1997 as HighGear Moto Cross & Jr. Dragster Covers. Two great years on the circuit and we decided to phase out of the MX cover business and went into the Marine Canvas business.  Why? We didn’t like all the travel, staying in motels and the noise and fumes in he Arenas was too much. We did all of our close friend’s Sailboat Canvas at Harrison’s
